Vadra, his Associates, his Defenders:In a Soup or a Song? Stop The Rot

Fifty crores of rupees, even 50 lakhs of rupees is not a small amount for an ordinary citizen of this country. And DLF must explain : to how many other such people have they given such an interest free loan. And if not, they cannot deny that this loan has been given because Robert Vadra is in a special position and is in a position to influence people in his favour. Now the usual Government Ministers are asking Kejriwal to prove what has been disclosed. Very funny. Because Kejriwal is not the CBI or a public prosecutor. He has given information so damaging that any normal Government would hang their head in shame. And the story does not end there. With that 50 crores interest free loan, Vadra has bought property from the same DLF.

The new political outfit has made several allegations against the son-in-law of Sonia Gandhi, Robert Vadra. Apart from the fact that the figures given are quite high (Kejriwal alleged there were rupees 65 crores of unsecured loans that were given to Vadra by DLF and added that “we dug further and found loans worth rupees 85 crores),  on the question of principle two things are very clear. One, Robert Vadra : his total identification is that he is the son-in-law of Sonia Gandhi. Before he married Priyanka he might have been a businessman from Moradabad, but of a very ordinary variety and there are hundreds and thousands of that level. After becoming Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law, he is in a different position. The second thing which is very clear is that both he and DLF have already admitted that there has been corruption. I will explain how. DLF has said that they have given an interest free loan of 50 crores to Vadra.  Robert Vadra himself has agreed. And DLF, like all corporate bodies, say it is perfectly legal. Nobody is questioning the legality of DLF giving a loan, but Robert Vadra taking that loan interest free is corruption. Corruption means corruption, because even if, the amount is just rupees 50 lakhs, it amounts to at least 50 thousand rupees per month as continuous bribe. Mr. Singh of DLF has not given his personal money. He has given the money from the company. The company has got debts of thousands of crores from banks. The DLF is paying the bank more than 12 per cent to 15 per cent interest. Here, if we take 12 per cent which is a modest figure, it amounts to 6 lakhs rupees a year on 50 lakhs of rupees which is 50 thousand rupees per month. Till the loan is repaid it is a continuous running bribe of 50 thousand rupees a month. Now somebody may say that 50 thousand rupees is a small figure. No it is not a question of small or big, it is a question of principle. A business house in India which no doubt needs favours from the Government every day has kept Robert Vadra on its pay roll at 50 thousand rupees a month and Vadra has accepted it. Both these parties have accepted this fact even as an answer to the charge made by Kejriwal. This already attracts the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The Finance Minister himself has defended Vadra. What a shame. There are bigger business houses in India, who are constantly under attack. Whether it is the Tatas or the Birlas or the Ambanis, the Finance Minister never thought of defending them. Here the deal is not with the Government, the deal is with the DLF. So, I can understand the DLF saying that there is nothing wrong. How is Chidambaram saying that there is nothing wrong?

If somebody goes in for a PIL, an FIR has to be filed against Robert Vadra for taking of an interest free loan of 50 lakhs. You cannot just say that it is a loan. Yes, if it is a loan of 50 thousand rupees, I can agree. If it is a loan of 1 lakhs or 2 lakhs of rupees interest free and temporary, 50 crores of rupees, even 50 lakhs of rupees is not a small amount for an ordinary citizen of this country. Now this is as transparent as one can get. I am quite familiar with  corporate sector tactics. This is what we can do. We can give money to somebody. This is what we call ‘obliging’, it amounts to giving a bribe by cheque. Giving of bribe by cash, you have heard of but this is giving bribe by cheque. First the cheque is for a rupees 50 lakhs loan then I tell him to buy some land from me. It becomes non agricultural  and that land worth rupees 50 lakhs  becomes worth rupees 50 crores. These are normally the tactics of a businessman. Recently many such cases have come to light. A person will give donation to a trust formed by a politician. This is called a donation. The income tax officer will allow it but what is the donation? The organisation is so small and the donation is so big, then it is a bribe. In Karnataka, one businessman bought land from Yeddyurappa’s son, a 2 crore land he bought for 20 crores _ 18 crores is bribe. Always on paper it is the value of land but everybody knows _ India is a very intelligent society. Nobody is a fool here. Robert Vadra has taken a rupees 50 lakh interest free loan, everybody knows why it was given. Then he buys some land, everybody knows that this land is worth much more. There is no secret. The only people who don’t know about it are the Ministers in the Government of India. They do not understand all this. The Government agencies turned a blind eye for obvious reasons. Tomorrow let the Government change and the same Vadra will be behind bars. Only one information which is already in public records, what more and what else he has done I don’t know, but his rupees 50 crores interest free loan is itself a crime. And if the Government and the courts don’t act it is a shame. Robert Vadra should get up and explain what his state was before he married Priyanka Gandhi. What was the turnover of his companies? He was a man of straw. He was worth nothing. All his worth has come after marrying into this family. Contrast this, the same family. Indira Gandhi married Feroze Gandhi who was a man of ordinary means. He died a man of ordinary means. He could not imagine ever taking advantage. His father-in-law was Jawahar Lal Nehru. He never thought for a moment that he is privileged because of that. He thought that my father-in-law is Jawahar Lal Nehru and I should behave in an exemplary manner. These two examples of two son-in-laws shows from where to where we have reached. Even now, the Government should wake up, the ruling party should wake up and stop this rot in the society.

Robert Vadra has taken, lets say, a rupees 50 lakh interest free loan, everybody knows why it was given.

Two other things I must bring to your notice. The largest Opposition party, the BJP, had all these details in their possession for the last few months if not one whole year. The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha never raised a single issue. Once, the Economic Times did a story on Robert Vadra. It was largely expected that the BJP will take it up but for reasons which are not easy to understand but not difficult to guess, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley kept quiet on this matter. If the Government fails, it is a bad thing but if the opposition fails then democracy is really in danger. If the BJP thinks their job is to be hand in gloves with the Congress party in all these shady deals, then they will lose the right to try and replace the Congress party. If they are the same as the Congress, then they are offering no alternative to the country. Secondly, the funny part, DLF has said that all deals are transparent. I agree with them. They are so transparent that we can see through it, it is very obvious. It is so funny that the Congress Ministers are jumping to support Vadra. Why? Somebody says that the attack on Vadra is an attack on the Congress party. Nobody on earth can understand this logic. He is not even an ordinary member of the Congress party, he is certainly not an office bearer and he certainly does not say that I bought all these properties on behalf of the party. Whatever he has done, let us assume for a moment that he is a private citizen. He must get a chance to defend himself. Why should the people in power try to defend him? This is the most funny thing. If the Opposition party does not want to raise it, and if one Kejriwal has raised it, then you tell Kejriwal that we will sue you or you prove it. In that case, I tell you what is the obvious answer : the Government should put up a special investigating team (SIT) to investigate and make Mr. Kejriwal the Chairman of that SIT. He will prove everything. Give him the chance, give him the power that a prosecutor requires and then if he says so, take action against him. This has gone too far and it has come too near the powers that be, Robert Vadra is too near those powers. Let Robert Vadra defend himself in a democracy. Let the Opposition raise the issue. Nothing will be done overnight but this is very clumsy, very messy. You are trying to make a banana republic of this Constitution. Please stop it. People will not forgive you. The Finance Minister himself has defended Vadra. What a shame. There are bigger business houses in India, who are constantly under attack. Whether it is the Tatas or the Birlas or the Ambanis, the Finance Minister never thought of defending them. Even the 2G scam or Coalgate, the Government is saying that nothing wrong has taken place. Here the deal is not with the Government, the deal is with the DLF. So, I can understand the DLF saying that there is nothing wrong. How is Chidambaram saying that there is nothing wrong? What is the ‘zero’ of this subject? I think the whole principle of governance is going down — much below an acceptable level. The earlier the Government stops it, the better it is.
