Recently, an amazing thing happened. A friend involved in andolans or movements came to me and said that Anna Hazare has created a Bhasmasur (a mythological demon). I was startled! I asked him, Bhasmasur?Who? He took the name of Arvind Kejriwal, and said that Anna gave Arvind Kejriwal to the country in the form of the achievement of the andolan or movement. I asked, what is there about Bhasmasur the demon in this and he replied that it wouldn’t have mattered if Arvind Kejriwal had only proved correct his parting of ways from Anna, because both have said that our destination is the same though our paths are different. But Arvind Kejriwal is bent on ‘finishing’ Anna.
I could not understand how Arvind Kejriwal could ‘finish off’ Anna, but that same friend said that Arvind Kejriwal, after forming his party, did not contact Anna Hazare even once. There is a certain beauty in a relationship, but Arvind Kejriwal destroyed that beauty as well. And he fabricated such conditions that Anna Hazare was compelled to remain in his native village, Ralegan Siddhi. Whether Anna stayed in Ralegan Siddhi because of Arvind Kejriwal or whether he stayed there for meditation is not known, but the result was that he did stay on there and now we are getting to hear the language of Arvind Kejriwal’s associates. One/theoretician says the Aam Aadmi Party is not running due to the strength of Anna. A second theoretician says that by winning the elections in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party has proved Anna Hazare wrong. Apart from this, they mostly say, what was Anna Hazare? Even in Maharashtra, to which Anna belongs, nobody paid heed to his andolans. It was us people who brought him to Delhi, made him a leader in the country and after he became a leader, the first time he betrayed or deceived anyone of tried for the first time to relegate someone to the sidelines and marginalise them, it was the same people who made him a leader.
Anna says that even today there is no doubt about Arvind Kejriwal’s individual commitment and whatever Arvind Kejriwal will do in Delhi according to his capacity, he will do correctly. Now there is the challenge of the Lok Sabha elections before Anna. Anna has created an Arvind Kejriwal, but now there is the challenge before him of how to create five hundred Kejriwals…I agree with the view that Anna Hazare has to create five hundred personalities like Arvind Kejriwal – personalities which are like the August 2011 Arvind Kejriwal and not the Arvind Kejriwal of December 2013, who is making efforts to distance himself from Anna.
There is another thing related to Anna which has spread all over the country like a rumour. People say that in Delhi the Government of Anna has been formed. This is being said by those people who have faith in Anna’s moral power. They derived strength from Anna’s movement, a confidence was generated in them that they could do something in the country. For the first time in a long while people stood up in such a big country. Children, the old and the young, everybody raised slogans and the amazing thing was that nowhere in the whole country was even a single cart looted. So far people had been seeing processions of political parties. When the crowds went to participate in them, station after station was looted. Perhaps that is why the change in Delhi created a perception in the country that this Government is Anna’s Government. Both the things are not correct : the belief of the friend involved in andolans that Anna created a demon is as wrong as the impression that Anna’s Government is functioning in Delhi.
I look at it this way, that there was dense fog and in that dense fog Anna emerged as a ray of hope, showed a direction to the people. There was a churning. From that churning, two paths emerged in the form of thoughts. Anna believed that the Lok Sabha was the path to change and he believed that in the Lok Sabha elections, people’s candidates should contest. On the other Arvind Kejriwal believed that the elections in Delhi are relatively small, people could be brought in with less expense, therefore if we win here in Delhi, then we will create a new hope in the country. Anna said that if there was even a slight mistake, Delhi would become counter productive and the Lok Sabha prospects would become blurred. Anna was also of the view that it was not necessary that all the people who became candidates in the Assembly Elections would be in agreement ideologically.
But from that churning Anna gave a personality to the country, whose name is Arvind Kejriwal and who has emerged in the form of a new comet. Anna says that even today there is no doubt about Arvind Kejriwal’s individual commitment and whatever Arvind Kejriwal will do in Delhi according to his capacity, he will do correctly. Now there is the challenge of the Lok Sabha elections before Anna. Anna has created an Arvind Kejriwal, but now there is the challenge before him of how to create five hundred Kejriwals. Anna is thinking and meditating on this, because it is essential to create five hundred Arvind Kejriwals to change the country. If one Kejriwal can sustain himself, where amongst many political leaders in the country there will be an increase of only one leader, if five hundred Kejriwals are created, then the way for change in the country will be cleared. That will be so because in that situation, the need in the Lok Sabha will mostly be for MPs who have faith in the people of the country, want to solve the problems of the people of the country and should have clear views on the policies needed to solve those problems. If they will not have a clear viewpoint, then they will be able to solve some problems, but will not be able to make policies to solve the problems and ensure that further problems are not created again.
Anna Hazare has said that Arvind Kejriwal should not contest the Lok Sabha elections he should concentrate on Delhi, but then who will fight the Lok Sabha elections? Perhaps there are two things in Anna’s mind. Perhaps Anna Hazare is searching for such forces in established political parties who have faith in new economic policies, and who can assure the people that they will fulfill the promises that they are making. Or then Anna Hazare will select such candidates to stand in the elections who are not tainted and are not criminals and have faith in the people of the country But a question arises here and that is if there is a good candidate in a party set-up and that party does not believe in the policies which Anna Hazare wants to formulate. Even if such a candidate wins, what will he or she be able to do in Parliament?
So will Anna Hazare think about making fifty or hundred such candidates contest who are against new economic policies or market based economic policies and who give their affidavit to Anna Hazare, prove their confidence in the people. But such independent candidates will fall easy prey to those people who buy Governments on the strength of money, and get Governments to make decisions, get Governments formed or get Ministers made.
There are all these questions. What will be the answer to these questions, no one knows. Perhaps Anna Hazare too does not have the answer. But I do not agree with the view that Anna Hazare has created a demon in politics. Rather,
I agree with the view that Anna Hazare has to create five hundred personalities like Arvind Kejriwal – personalities which are like the August 2011 Arvind Kejriwal and not the Arvind Kejriwal of December 2013, who is making efforts to distance himself from Anna.
