Special Matters Call For Special Handling

kamal-morarkaThe Jammu and Kashmir elections will start this week. Traditionally, the National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are the main parties fighting each other and as usual, they alternate every five years. It is expected that the PDP will do better this time and the NC will have to suffer an anti-incumbency sentiment. The only matter of interest would be the number of seats the Congress and the BJP are likely to get, because that will determine who will form the Government and in what manner. The BJP’s boast of 44+ doesn’t look to be practical, because it means they expect a substantial number of seats in the Valley, which seems unlikely. J&K is always a special case and the less the rest of the country meddles with it better it is. Let the local parties sort it out and give a Government that the people choose.
Pandit Nehru’s 125th birth anniversary was celebrated on November 14. The saving grace was that this Government did not abolish the celebrations altogether; they replaced the old committee with a new one, which is alright, all Governments do that. The only sad part is they unnecessarily dropped people like Gopal Krishna Gandhi and Ram Chandra Guha, etc., who are academics and historians. I can understand their dropping Congressmen, but why drop all these people? However, these are not the big issues. Right from the

Pandit Nehru’s contribution to this country can never be undermined. I am sure that but for him, as an individual and as the first Prime Minister, India would have become another Pakistan where democracy would not have flourished and other forces would have started interfering. That one thing, that one contribution which he has made should override all other mistakes that he has made while tackling the Kashmir issue or the Chinese relationship. After all individuals are not gods and they are prone to make mistakes. There is no use pointing out mistakes and overlooking the major contribution that he has made and that is to firmly establish democracy in such a religiously dominated country, full of superstition and illiteracy. It is a big contribution by itself.

The cleanliness drive running in the country is in danger of becoming a gimmick. All over the country people are talking of Swachch Bharat without coming up with concrete measures as to how really we are going to keep the place clean. Unless citizens cooperate it is not possible. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation has also started a drive for a clean Mumbai. But these are difficult things and better to have Mohalla committees and District Committees and at the Panchayat level. Otherwise it will just remain a slogan and photo opportunity. It will not serve any purpose.
