Raise Issues That Will Unite, Not Divide

kamal-morarkaWhile the Government is taking small but steady steps towards the agenda of development and getting foreign investment and the Finance Minister is also promising some announcements in the Budget, it is interesting to see that the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other fraternal organisations of the BJP have embarked upon their own agenda, which in the present situation will only embarrass and even undermine the Narendra Modi Government. Conversion is a doctrine in Christianity where proselytisation is encouraged and they want more and more people to become Christians and Catholics and Protestants. In Islam, I do not know their scriptures, but probably conversion to Islam is also mandated, it is also provided. However, in Hinduism there is no such procedure. One is either born a Hindu or not born a Hindu. There is no procedure to convert somebody to Hinduism. I have read the available Hindu scriptures and texts and nowhere do I find such a conversion mentioned. There can be two reasons for this. One is that Hinduism doesn’t have a date. It is so old that probably organised religions did not exist then. So it has not existed that somebody has to be converted to Hinduism. Secondly, Hinduism is one philosophy which has the maximum catholicity of spirit that runs through the pantheon, whether it is the Vedas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Gita, anything. So conversion to Hinduism itself is an irrelevant and a fruitless exercise. It is political in nature, it has nothing to do with religion. It is trying to show superiority like inter-caste, inter-communal, the normal problems of this country. How these organisations think that by

The Gita will not be accepted even by Hindus as the only book. There are Hindus I know who believe in the Vedas. There are Hindus I know who believe in other texts. Of course the Gita is a very important book, I myself believe that the Gita is a very wise book of wise learning. However to say that you declare it a national book, again there are two factors. One, this is a country where so many religions co-exist that again you are just trying to raise an issue to divide, not to unite. Secondly, you are undermining Hindu philosophy, Hindu Darshan. Veer Savarkar who is their new hero or the old hero used to say Hinduism is cultural ‘Indianness’ in Indian cultural nationalism. Then how does the Gita fit in as a national book? The only national book that can be considered a national book in India is the Constitution of India. That covers everything.

ratcheting up all this they will be helping Narendra Modi, I do not know. I think they are doing the biggest disservice to him. Instead of helping him to consolidate his Government they are doing this, which is not explicable. In the same vein, an enlightened person like Sushma Swaraj has called for the Gita to be declared a national book. I am sure she got carried away because the programme where she said this was related to the Gita. Secondly, as important as that, you are undermining Hindu philosophy, Hindu Darshan. Veer Savarkar who is their new hero or the old hero used to say Hinduism is cultural Indianness in Indian cultural nationalism. Then how does the Gita fit in as a national book?
The only national book that can be considered a national book in India is the Constitution of India. That covers everything. It is a very wisely written book under Mahatma Gandhi’s inspiration by tall people like Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad, B.R. Ambedkar, etc. To do anything better than that you need really wise people, and I think it is a little difficult for us to swallow that the present generation of leaders think they are wiser than these freedom fighters. The less we tinker with settled matters, the better it is for this country.
