Rahul Needs The Right Kind Of ‘Upgrading’

Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi are two personalities about whom it is being publicised that one out of the two will become the Prime Minister. Till six months ago, Narendra Modi’s party used to raise sporadically questions on issues like rising prices, corruption and unemployment. Sometimes, they also took up inflation and the rising prices and held demonstrations, but suddenly, the BJP stopped raising these questions. The Congress used to level allegations of corruption, lethargy, infighting against the Bharatiya Janata Party, but the Congress too stopped leveling these allegations. The two parties came to a hidden agreement. The reason behind the agreement was solely one  that both parties have played a lesser or a larger role in exacerbating problems. Therefore, perhaps both the parties decided that we just should not attack one another over issues. Let us bring the two personalities mentioned before face to face.
The Bharatiya Janata Party saw an advantage in this of making the widespread bad governance of the Congress an issue and making Narendra Modi the Prime Minister with ease. And the Congress felt that by making Rahul Gandhi’s age an issue the youth could be taken along and Rahul Gandhi could be made the Prime Minister. Rahul Gandhi also made a statement that the new Government will be of youths. It seems to all the old Congress leaders, and by old I mean those above fifty years, that preparations have been made to end their role in politics. Perhaps in the coming Lok Sabha elections, people aged between 24 to 40 years of age will get more than 70 per cent of seats. Meanwhile, both the parties are lost in dreams of coming to power.
Rahul Gandhi is touring the entire country. But it is a strange coincidence that no big gatherings are taking place for Rahul Gandhi anywhere. In Uttar Pradesh, at one place about 170 people attended his meeting, at another meeting about 2,500 came. After that, wherever he went, nowhere did he get crowds of more than 10,000. Is Rahul Gandhi having to suffer the consequences of the bad governance of the Congress, or is it that the kind of language which Rahul Gandhi is using, and that language or that style is not generating or awakening any confidence in him amongst the people? Rahul Gandhi made the assassination of his grandmother, his father an election issue. Perhaps it is because of these very childish statements of Rahul Gandhi that a difficulty is arising in his standing up in the form of a serious challenger.
Narendra Modi has nothing to with inflation, corruption, unemployment being removed, but Narendra Modi possesses the art of raising these issues and questions against the Congress as a weapon, a tool for publicity in the interests of the BJP. On the other side, Rahul Gandhi is not being able to say anything against Narendra Modi through which it can be known or shown that he is not mature or lacks political ability.

Rahul Gandhi’s statements, Rahul Gandhi’s style, Rahul Gandhi’s language and Rahul Gandhi’s appearance – they do not reflect someone who is to become the Prime Minister of this country. And here it is the duty of people like Mohan Prakash that they hone Rahul Gandhi a bit, that they polish Rahul Gandhi a bit and tell Rahul Gandhi about the basic problems of this country so that he can face Narendra Modi as an intellectual. If they will not do this, the conviction will gather more force in people that a distance still remains between wisdom and Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress party is completely dependent on Rahul Gandhi. Also before Rahul is a ‘mind problem’. Many rumours and tales about him have settled in the minds of people. Those rumours and tales are being believed as true by people. Like what does Rahul Gandhi do after eight o’ clock at night, who does he meet. It is believed that people in political parties meet party workers till evening and after evening hold consultative meetings and frame political strategies. But nobody has seen a meeting taking place with Rahul Gandhi after eight o’clock at night, they have not seen him meeting people after eight o’clock at night, and in such a situation what should happen is happening : different kinds of rumours about Rahul Gandhi are spreading.
On the other hand, there is still an eagerness amongst the people of the country for Rahul’s sister, Priyanka Gandhi. The political understanding of Priyanka Gandhi has not come before the people, in the same manner that Rahul Gandhi’s has not come before the people. But Priyanka Gandhi’s fist is closed. In the context of Priyanka Gandhi, hope can be seen amongst people in the Congress and it seems to them that if Priyanka Gandhi appears in election campaigning and if she contests in the Lok Sabha elections, then she will be able to exert her influence on a lot of seats in the country.
Since the last twenty years, it is being fixed in the minds of the people of India that all the charms of Priyanka Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi’s expressions and gestures, her style, so much so that even her face, her hair, resemble those of her grandmother, Indira Gandhi. And one doesn’t know why but people want to see in Priyanka Gandhi an image of Indira Gandhi. That is why whenever any news regarding Priyanka Gandhi spreads, a wave of happiness sweeps across the faces of people in the Congress.
It is also true that even though Sonia Gandhi may have been born in Italy, her mind is the mind of an Indian mother. She prefers her son more than her daughter. The daughter can be her friend, but her political heir will be her son — Sonia Gandhi has indicated this many times through signals, tell-tale signals. That is why she does not consider any such act of her son as bad which raises a question over her or her understanding. One such incident took place at the time of bringing in an Ordinance to change the verdict of the Supreme Court. This Ordinance was passed in the Cabinet after talks with Sonia Gandhi, and was introduced in the Rajya Sabha. But when the Ordinance was sent to the President, suddenly Rahul Gandhi said that this Ordinance was ‘nonsense’, it should be torn up and thrown away.
Nobody believes that Sonia Gandhi would not have discussed the Ordinance with Rahul Gandhi, because Sonia Gandhi is preparing Rahul Gandhi mentally and physically to run the party in her stead. She must certainly have discussed it. Then why did Rahul Gandhi stand up in protest against a decision his mother had made? Rahul Gandhi could have opposed the Ordinance in a better way – he should not have allowed it to be brought in at all. But his advisors prepared him to do it the way it was done and they created a dramatic atmosphere for it.
There are intelligent people amongst Rahul Gandhi’s advisors. Mohan Prakash, who was a President of Banaras Hindu University and has faith in Dr. Lohia’s thinking, is the most intelligent of them. No matter how close to capitalists Mohan Prakash remains, no matter how close to officials he remains, Mohan Prakash is basically a socialist and the poor are in his thoughts.
Whenever Rahul Gandhi talks about the poor or general public, I remember the face of Mohan Prakash, that he must most certainly have done the work of filling Rahul Gandhi’s brain with these lines or this subject. But despite this why does Rahul Gandhi’s tongue make slips? Why does Rahul Gandhi give immature statements? While giving a speech, instead of being an angry young man Rahul Gandhi should speak a language that can be understood by the general public of this country. Who has filled Rahul Gandhi’s mind that to bring the people of the country to join him, an image of Amitabh Bachchan in the film ‘Deewar’ is essential? This was certainly explained to Rahul Gandhi by Javed Akhtar. But if Rahul Gandhi has his own sense, or if he imbibes, assimilates and absorbs Mohan Prakash’s understanding, then he can speak the language of a leader of this country, rather than projecting an immature political style.
