It is very difficult to write anything about people with whom one is acquainted. But because what has been said and what has been done are setting up a tradition in politics, it is essential to talk about them. Arvind Kejriwal and his colleagues have begun several new things in politics. The things which other political parties did surreptitiously and which were criticised, today those things are being done by the associates of the Aam Aadmi Party.
Let us talk first of all about Yogendra Yadav. Yogendra Yadav’s was a name in the country which was regarded as that of someone who guarded the humanitarian tradition of socialism. The late Kishan Patnaik was much talked about as a young MP in the Lok Sabha. Dr. Lohia saw Kishan Patnaik as a potential leader. Yogendra Yadav was Kishan Patnaik’s companion and he even took forward many things said by Kishan Patnaik. When people separated from the socialist stream and became victims of digression in politics, Yogendra Yadav did not go along with them and he even edited the magazine ‘Samayik Varta’ which had been founded and edited by Kishan Patnaik.
Yogendra Yadav founded a Research Institute and achieved distinction in the country for analysis of election and electoral possibilities. People had faith too in what he said, but now Yogendra Yadav is using that same credibility of his for sophistry or absurd arguments. When Yogendra Yadav is asked that you make allegations, but do not show any evidence for them, Yogendra Yadav says that we have made an allegation, the person before us can if he or she desires, go to the court and in the court reply to our charges. We will give the reply in the court. This is an argument which is a dangerous argument. It means that now people will level allegations and say go to court, it is there that we will give you a reply.
One had not expected this sophistry or absurd arguments, at least not from Yogendra Yadav. But when Yogendra Yadav began this sophistry or absurd arguments, how could Ashutosh Gupta be left behind, and not just that but Arvind Kejriwal and all his associates are taking the support of this sophistry or absurd arguments. I do not believe this is untoward or reckless talk, because Arvind Kejriwal has never had any ideological relationship with any movement. In any case, Arvind Kejriwal was never a part of any movement, but ideology is something which has become irrelevant, and establishing this was also something that Arvind Kejriwal did. He began making problems an ideology, whereas problems arise or are created because there is no ideology or policies.
Something new has been created in politics, whose name is ignorance, misbehaviour, limited outlook, an ideological zero and whatever else we say would be correct, this misadventure. The phenomenon is not only dangerous for politics, but also for the people who are adopting these methods. This method does not lead towards change, it leads towards actual anarchy. And those who are adopting these methods today, tomorrow these methods will become like a bone stuck in the throat.
Anna Hazare says that if economic policies in the country are not changed, then corruption, inflation, unemployment can never end, because these three and many other ills linked with them are ‘gifts’ of these economic policies. Therefore, if these ills are to be ended, economic policies will have to be changed and villages will have to be made small units. That is, areas where production takes place will have to be made prominent and towns and cities where production does not take place will have to be made subsidiary units of production. If villages are taken as the main centers of production, then towns and cities will have to be made subsidiaries, and it will not be villages which have to be made subsidiaries. It seems to me that Yogendra Yadav and Anand Kumar can understand this fact, but if they enact the drama of being asleep even when awake, then nobody can make them understood.
Arvind Kejriwal may perhaps not be able to understand this fact, which is why instead of making policies he is making problems into an ideology. The Bharatiya Janata Party does the same thing, the Congress does the same thing and Arvind Kejriwal is doing the same thing and these three together are the supporters of the existing market-based neo-liberal policies. When Arvind Kejriwal says that the Government’s task is only to monitor work, running industries should be done by industrialists, then he is heartlessly handing over the people of the country into the hands of the market.
On the other side, in politics we have never been supporters of mayhem, riots and brawls and damaging and breaking things. And therefore when such things are promoted, then mobsters create a nuisance not only among the common public, but also damage and break things in the offices of television channels and newspapers because it seems to them that newspapers or television channels are speaking against their interests. All the education of politics is kept on the rack or shelf. The case of Voltaire and Rousseau is famous, which perhaps all of them have forgotten. Both were mutual enemies, but when Voltaire was stopped from speaking, Rousseau said I am his sworn enemy but stopping Voltaire from speaking is a dangerous thing and I will fight with all my heart and soul that Voltaire should be given the right to speak. This is not a story, it is the basic fundamental principle of politics. It is there that we see the actions of political parties. Narendra Modi’s police stops Arvind Kejriwal from moving around in Gujarat. Is but natural as Narendra Modi himself is not democratic. But, Arvind Kejriwal and his colleagues claim to have faith in democracy, and still in place of Gandhian demonstrations they copy the means and methods of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and the Youth Congress for holding demonstrations. This is dangerous. It means that Arvind Kejriwal and his colleagues never had any faith in Anna’s movement and his Gandhian ways. If the reins of movement had been in the hands of Arvind Kejriwal and Anna Hazare had not continuously talked of non-violence, then there would have been riots in this country in 2011, because the people had anger in them, people wanted change, the Government was not listening, Parliament was not listening.
If we imagine that time in today’s situation, then certainly Arvind Kejriwal would have instigated the people in the country and would have created an atmosphere of anarchy and chaos. And it is also something amazing that Arvind Kejriwal declares publicly that ‘I am an anarchist’. This means that all the separatist violent movements that are happening, Arvind Kejriwal is giving political logic to all of them. If Arvind Kejriwal is doing all this deliberately, then he is against democracy. In a democracy there is one way of protest, and that is the way of ‘civil disobedience’. Arvind Kejriwal does not know the meaning of these words, but Anand Kumar and Yogendra Yadav know the meaning of these words. I am writing all this with sorrow. I know that now Arvind Kejriwal and his associates cannot be made to understand. They can stand on the roadside and at any time start a campaign to abuse anyone, but they forget that by spitting at the sky, the spit does not reach the sky but lands back on their own faces.
My greatest regret at the Aam Aadmi Party and its activities is that the people of Delhi had thought that a party which was formed in the name of Anna would follow his thoughts, would govern Delhi in the same manner, but the Aam Aadmi Party ground Anna’s thoughts into the dust and did what the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress wanted to do. I do not believe that Narendra Modi and the Bhartiya Janata Party are democratic, but if before those who are not democratic, we too adopt undemocratic ways, then we are not democratic.
We at least cannot see any doubt in this.
