CONTRADICTIONS HAVE TO BE SORTED OUT

kamal-morarkaThe Prime Minister went to the US and came back. Of course he had gone to the UN and not on a bilateral visit to the United States. Unfortunately, the entire Indian press has held expectations from the visit too high. Bilateral relations are not built in this way. Of course, for the Prime Minister, who was refused a visa by the US, it was a high point that he was accorded such a warm welcome not only by the Indian community in the US but even the US President invited him for dinner. So far, so good.
However when it comes to brass tacks, it is true that the Prime Minister put across the Indian concerns quite well but the US response is not as great as the press is making it out to be. Also, we should be aware of the danger of depending too much on the US to contain terrorism from the Pakistan side. We have to fight our own battles. India looking to the US to get us relief from the terrorism of the November 2009 kind is a sad day. With the kind of military might we have, and the para military forces and the security forces in the country, it was bad that enough that hotels like the Taj and the Oberoi got attacked in Mumbai. This could have been easily avoided with a little alertness. It is all right for India to pressurise Pakistan to bring the guilty to book but over dependence on the US for this matter compromises your sovereignty and dignity.

Let us wish Indo-US relations become more fruitful for both sides. But beyond that, to think as if this one visit has solved all problems will be a great mistake.  The Prime Minister is trying his best to connect with the people.  The heartening point is that he is giving Mahatma Gandhi the status that he deserves.  He keeps on mentioning Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi. It is an irony because the RSS has never believed in putting Gandhi on a pedestal.  Their stand has been that Gandhi is one of the freedom fighters. Father of the Nation phrase they do not use and they are not even prepared to agree that he was superior to the other freedom fighters.  So, in that context, it is heartening to note that at least the Prime Minister has realised that Gandhi has a place of his own, which cannot be compared to anybody else.

In economics, money flows in the direction where there is profit. Nobody is going to invest in India because the Indian community has gathered in big numbers in Madison Square. Nobody is going to invest in India just because you have got a Government with a clear majority. But if we are able to create conditions in which the foreign investors find it profitable, they will come. How far that is desirable, how much foreign investment we want, how much we can sustain, it is all a matter of detail. Let us wish Indo-US relations become more fruitful for both sides. But beyond that, to think as if this one visit has solved all problems will be a great mistake. The Prime Minister is trying his best to connect with the people. And even in the cleanliness campaign, he began with Mahatma Gandhi, from the Red Fort he mentioned Mahatma Gandhi. Again, it was on October 2 that he started this campaign. I wonder what the RSS will do. The RSS has been against ‘vyakti puja’ and that’s why they are against Gandhi.
They oppose Indira Gandhi because Congress calls her the supreme leader. But the irony is that Narendra Modi is being worshipped by the BJP cadres more than the Congress ever worshipped Indira Gandhi. So much for the RSS. The RSS wants boycott of Chinese goods. The RSS wants to be very clear on the border issue. Narendra Modi wants to befriend the Chinese. All these contradictions, they will have to sort out. If they have to go further, though they have a clear majority, it is clear that they have got lot of work to do.
