The victory of Narendra Modi has created a silence between the Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Prominent people in the Sangh are veering to the view that Narendra Modi should be brought in as the leader of the country, but the leaders of
the Bharatiya Janata Party are not in consonance with this thought. Almost all the leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party are of the belief that as soon as Narendra Modi will be presented in the form of the next Prime Minister of the country, 80 per cent people of the country would go against the Bharatiya Janata Party, because 16 per cent Muslims and 80 per cent Hindus of the country are not in consonance with the thinking of Modi. What are the reasons behind this estimate of all the leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party ? The exact reasons the leaders would know, but their estimate doesn’t seem to be incorrect.
Many leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party with whom I have spoken in the last one month all told me personally that the Bharatiya Janata Party will have to take quite a few tough decisions about itself. These tough decisions are essential, because the people of the country are not getting convinced that the Bharatiya Janata Party can be a viable alternative for the Congress. People begin to see a viable alternative in advance. The leaders with whom I had a conversation are all first grade leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party and there cannot be doubts about the understanding of any of them.
Actually, the Bharatiya Janata Party has been disconnected from the people equally and as much as the Congress party. Moves are made by the Bharatiya Janata Party, but the benefit goes to the Congress. When the BJP worked on the strategy of voting in Parliament for FDI in retail, then it felt that all the non Congress party would be compelled to give votes to the party and to stand along with it. So Sushma Swaraj never seriously contacted Mayawati, Mulayam Singh and other parties. What sort of a joke is this – calling for voting in the Parliament without doing the homework and losing. This incident bespeaks that the Bharatiya Janata Party has even forgotten the fundamental principle of floor co-ordination. If the Bharatiya Janata Party had spoken to Karunanidhi, Mulayam Singh and Mayawati through any medium then it would not have faced a shameful situation and neither would it have had to make the statement that it has won a moral victory.
The Sangh would even take the risk of defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party again but it is not going to make anyone from Delhi — Advani, Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj or Rajnath Singh or Anant Kumar the President. The well wishers of the Bharatiya Janata Party are saying that on the one hand the mistakes made by the party and on the other hand this attitude of the Sangh are closing the doors of the future for the Bharatiya Janata Party.
It is a different matter that both Mulayam Singh and Mayawati are disappointed with the attitude of the Congress. Both have made allegations against the Congress party of not adhering to the conditions agreed upon with them, but this problem is their own. The supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party feel that the party is continuously making mistakes — one after the other. Now it is almost becoming clear that Nitin Gadkari will become the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party once again. The Sangh would even take the risk of defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party again but it is not going to make anyone from Delhi Advani, Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj or Rajnath Singh or Anant Kumar the President. The well wishers of the Bharatiya Janata Party are saying that on the one hand the mistakes made by the party and on the other hand this attitude of the Sangh are closing the doors of the future for the Bharatiya Janata Party. People in the Bharatiya Janata Party are also saying that if it is possible then Rajnath Singh should be made the President of BJP, so that at least an atmosphere of a contest with the Congress is created. Where the Bharatiya Janata Party is at the moment in the fight for the Lok Sabha, nobody can tell.
One more argument was seen against the Bharatiya Janata Party some days ago during the student’s and youth protests on the streets in the matter of justice for rape victims and safety for women. People have a question : why was the Bharatiya Janata Party not seen anywhere during these protests or why didn’t it separately take youths along with it. It was not necessary to walk with its banner in front of these protests, because the students and youth would not have liked it and neither would they have allowed it, but demonstrations could have been held separately. Demonstrations were held almost all over the country, even after this the Bharatiya Janata Party did not waken from its slumber. Their leaders only and only gave television statements sitting in the drawing room of their homes. It came to be known that the Bharatiya Janata Party is not standing too far behind the Congress on this issue. So the two steps which the Bharatiya Janata Party did take, the benefits of those went to the Congress. This is very strange : what sort of thinking is this of the party which always shows them the face of defeat on the checkerboard of politics ? It is also a sad thing that the Bharatiya Janata Party does not now listen much to the opinions its the working members.
In such a situation what will people like Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha do, I don’t know. These people will now stop raising questions in the Bharatiya Janata Party and the little bit of ‘activeness’ which they were displaying will get finished off as well. However, their inactiveness will not make a big difference on the area of influence of the Bharatiya Janata Party, but the situation where the Bharatiya Janata Party has reached, if this ’disease’ increases in it then it might have to face more trouble. I am not ready to believe that the Bharatiya Janata Party does not understand these problems, but the working members of the Bharatiya Janata Party want solutions of these problems. That is probably why even after meeting people like us they share their trouble and their disappointments.
After the Delhi gang rape outrage, the leaders of the Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party have got a favourite topic to speak on. They are also commenting on the clothes of women, on their scarves, style of making their hair and on their style of speaking. Actually, the leaders making these comments want to take India to the world of the 18th century, but that world was not the world of India of the 18th century, that was the world outside India. These people want to denigrate the culture of India, the dreams of India and India’s capacity to fight. How much benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party will get, I don’t know, but the loss will be very much more to the Bharatiya Janata Party so its admirers believe. The Bharatiya Janata Party should listen to the words of its working members, its admirers and prepare itself as a viable alternative in competition with the Congress in the coming general elections that is my wish.
