Without understanding the politics of the Bharatiya Janata Party, what will happen in coming times cannot be assessed. The Bharatiya Janata Party is a major Opposition party in Parliament and governs in many states. In spite of this, the Bharatiya Janata Party which is going to make a bid for ‘Dilli ki Gaddi’ (the seat of power in Delhi) in the 2014 elections seems the most troubled at this point of time.
Yashwant Sinha, Swaminathan Gurumurthy, Arun Jaitley, Narendra Modi and Lal Krishna Advani along with Suresh Soni are names which are not just names. They are the names of the cannon like people who are trying to capture the Bharatiya Janata Party riddled with all its ongoing hindrances, retardations and the contradictions. S. Gurumurthy, who lives in Chennai is a renowned chartered accountant and for many years has been considered the master mind of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Gurumurthy started his career with the owner of the Indian Express, the late Ramnath Goenka and there he came in contact with Nanaji Deshmukh. Through Nanaji Deshmukh, Gurumurthy came close to the past leadership of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Sangh liked the style of his analysis, his contacts and his simplicity. From that time till date, Sarsanghachalaks have changed several times, but the place of Gurumurthy remained constant. He failed just twice : first in relation to Govindacharya when he could not save him and second in relation to Sanjay Joshi when he could not save him. But there are different reasons for not being able to save them.
The game plan to make Narendra Modi the Prime Minister was laid by Gurumurthy five years ago. First, he brought Ram Jethmalani to the Rajya Sabha because he thought nobody else could be a better advocate for Narendra Modi than Ram Jethmalani. When Gurumurthy felt that the desire to become the Prime Minister had awakened in Nitin Gadkari, then he made disclosures about the companies of Nitin Gadkari through Arvind Kejriwal. Till now, how the sources of Gurumurthy sent all the papers to Arvind Kejriwal is a secret, because there is no direct or indirect relation between Gurumurthy and Arvind Kejriwal. After this, Gurumurthy asked for the resignation of Nitin Gadkari through Mahesh Jethmalani. Mahesh Jethmalani is the son of a famous lawyer of the country, Ram Jethmalani and he himself is a very big lawyer. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the lawyer of a former Minister of Gujarat, Amit Shah. Mahesh Jethmalani announced his resignation from the Executive Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party and asked for the resignation of Nitin Gadkari. Mahesh Jethmalani took this step on the advice of his father, Ram Jethmalani, and Gurumurthy. After this Ram Jethmalani, launched a virtual campaign to remove Gadkari. He went to many leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party but no one gave him full fledged support.
To discuss the entire political activities of Nitin Gadkari and the situation that prevailed after the disclosures about his companies, the Ministers of the Bharatiya Janata Party were meeting each other individually. Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha met at the residence of former Minister of the Bharatiya Janata Party and candidate for the post of Vice President, Jaswant Singh, where they held a serious discussion on the situation of the Bharatiya Janata Party. These three people were worried that the Bharatiya Janata Party which was supposed to be seen coming into power was being seen moving a long way backwards. After this meeting, Jaswant Singh wrote a long letter about the political problems to Lal Krishna Advani, and urged Lal Krishna Advani to intervene in this situation. After reading the letter, Advani gave a phone call to Jaswant Singh and said that he should keep this letter confidential and tell nobody about this letter. When Ram Jethmalani went to meet Jaswant Singh, the latter discussed the letter with him. On that very day, in the evening, Ram Jethmalani spoke to the Press in a way as if a new group consisting of Jaswant Singh, Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha has been formed under his leadership. Whereas the reality was that these three, till that point of time, were still in a dilemma about what exactly to do and what not to do. However, these three had decided that they definitely have to do something to bring out the Bharatiya Janata Party from this stupefying situation.
The most important cause of worry for Yashwant Sinha, Jaswant Singh and Shatrughan Sinha was that they are not involved with the Sangh. After so many years, a relationship could
not be built between them and the Sangh. They were Ministers in the Government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee but the Sangh never took them to be their own.
The Sangh has also decided not to give party tickets next time to these three politicians. In between all these situations these three decided that they should make an effort to save the party and for this they first spoke to Lal Krishna Advani individually. After this they met Advaniji collectively. Then, Jaswant Singh met Advaniji twice and said that if he remains silent even now then the party will be wrecked. These three also told Lal Krishna Advani that he should speak to Sarsanghachalak Mohan Bhagwat as soon as possible. One of them even requested Lal Krishna Advani to pick up the phone and speak with Mohan Bhagwat straight away. But Advanji told a trusted confidante that at this age he will not walk separately from the Sangh. This trusted confidante asked Advaniji, ‘then what will happen to the country’, and Advaniji remained quiet.
In Lal Krishna Advani’s mind, there is a problem : Mohan Bhagwat along with all the members of the Sangh are ‘smaller’ in terms of age, experience and understanding than Lal Krishna Advani. Lal Krishna Advani does not think it suits his dignity to speak to them from his end. There would hardly have been any time when he would have spoken to Mohan Bhagwat from his side. And the Sangh also wants Lal Krishna Advani to announce his retirement from politics. On many occasions, even after getting such indications, Lal Krishna Advani did not take such a decision because he knows that if he drops out from this election then the situation of the Bharatiya Janata Party could be very bad.
It can be considered that Gurumurthy is the specialist in the art of complicating and solving games for the Bharatiya Janata Party. But in all these moves and counter moves the morale of the dedicated members of the Bharatiya Janata Party has been hurt the most. They are unable to understand whether it is the Congress which tops in deceiving itself in its own eyes or is it their own Bharatiya Janata Party which tops.
When the Sangh made Nitin Gadkari the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, then the Sangh had made a new experiment. The Sangh was of the opinion that out of the leaders seated in Delhi — and among them the first name was that of Lal Krishna Advani — nobody would be made the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party now. So the Sangh gave blind support to Nitin Gadkari who is from Nagpur and has also been a Minister in the Bharatiya Janata Party Government in Maharashtra. It is believed that Nitin Gadkari has been taking care of the expenses of people starting from the ‘dhobi’ (washerman) to the driver in the Sangh headquarters. But Nitin Gadkari could not establish his domination politically in the Bharatiya Janata Party. People in politics in Delhi like Lal Krishna Advani, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Venkaiah Naidu and Anant Kumar never found him worthy enough to hold any discussions with him related to political issues. During his entire tenure, Nitin Gadkari served as a courier boy. Another thought struck the Sangh : can Narendra Modi be sworn in as the President of the party ? The Sangh felt that Nitin Gadkari might not be able to give those results which the Bharatiya Janata Party desired. So the executive officer of the Sangh, Suresh Soni, in a meeting of the Sangh said that Arun Jaitley should be made the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Narendra Modi should be made the Prime Ministerial candidate. This statement of Suresh Soni gives an indication of the thought process of the leaders of the Sangh but the response from other leaders of the Sangh is still to come. The results from the Gujarat elections would come on 20 December. If Narendra Modi holds on to his present support then it would be one type of decision and if the percentage of votes in his favour decreases or his seats get reduced then it will be another type of decision. Last time around, Narendra Modi won in 30 constituencies with nearly 2000 majority votes. If his seats are reduced due to Keshubhai Patel then it would be a problem before the Sangh. The Sangh is thinking of the name of Narendra Modi only because the Sangh feels that by making Narendra Modi the Prime Ministerial candidate it would be easier to polarise the Hindus. The Sangh also feels that Narendra Modi is a good administrator and this too will benefit the Sangh.
Arun Jaitley laid his plans with the highest level of understanding : that Arun Jaitley who was taken as a manager by the Sangh till now, the same Arun Jaitley compelled the same Sangh to think about making him the President of the party. If the Sangh does so then it would be taken as a rectification of their mistakes. However, a few people also say that no leaders seated in Delhi, who were called D-4 by the Sangh, can be made President now, otherwise it would be called a mockery of statements the Sangh itself had made and will also be called political immaturity of the Sangh. There is an old friendship, rationality and feasibility between Arun Jaitley and Narendra Modi as well. So if Arun Jaitley relinquishes his ardent desire of becoming the Prime Minister then a strong successful combination could be built between him and Narendra Modi. The number of industrial houses who support Arun Jaitley are more than the number of big industrialists of India who support Narendra Modi. Lal Krishna Advani has been isolated in all these fights. He is only getting the support from those people who are not involved with the Sangh and their political career is dependent on the success and failure of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The political face of the Sangh is Suresh Soni, but many people in the Bharatiya Janata Party have doubts about the understanding of Suresh Soni. Narendra Modi is included in this, Sushma Swaraj also, Arun Jaitley also and the remaining leaders also who are regarded as the decisive leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party. On the other hand it is said about the Sangh that it has not given support to anyone in times of trouble. Let us start from Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In the year 1980, the Sangh gave support to Atal Bihari Vajpayee, but when the Babri Masjid was broken down, the Sangh deserted Atal Bihari Vajpayee. On the incitement of the Sangh, Rajnath Singh even asked for the resignation of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the Prime Minister because of his image and his understanding, and not because of the support of the Sangh. The second name is of Lal Krishna Advani, who had written on the grave (Mazaar) of Jinnah, had written the right thing, but the Sangh sent Sanjay Joshi and took the resignation of Lal Krishna Advani and when Narendra Modi opposed Sanjay Joshi then the Sangh left Sanjay Joshi isolated. There are many such names, among which Shanta Kumar, Kalyan Singh, Uma Bharti and Madan Lal Khurana are also included. There is a saying in the Bharatiya Janata Party : ‘Jo Bhi Sangh Ke Charno Me Gaya, Woh Uske Charno Ke Niche Aa Gaya.’ Who else other than Lal Krishna Advani can better understand the truth of this fact.
On the one hand, because of the strategies of the Sangh and the absence of a unanimous leader in the Bharatiya Janata Party, the workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party have become dispirited, while on the other hand prominent regional leaders have come up in the Bharatiya Janata Party. People like Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Raman Singh, Prem Kumar Dhumal and Vasundhara Raje etc., do not listen to anyone. Yeddyurappa of Karnataka is even ready to bring down the Government and has even left the party. Amongst the people who are known in the name of the central leadership, only the names of Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley come to the forefront and these three always need to kneel before the prominent leaders of the states. There is one more name who could be the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party and that name is Murli Manohar Joshi. Murli Manohar Joshi has become the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party just once, but most of the leaders of the party are not pleased with his style of working because when he was the President he never listened to anybody. But one of the principles of the Sangh has become an obstacle in making Murli Manohar Joshi the President — the principle that people more than the age of 75 years should leave politics. There is just one aim of Venkaiah Naidu, Anant Kumar and Sushma Swaraj : that somehow Nitin Gadkari should be removed from his Presidential post. When he is removed, only then the path ahead will open up.
In general, the workers and the leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, specifically those leaders who make the Bharatiya Janata Party win in the elections, have a clear opinion that the command of the party for the coming elections should be handed over in the hands of Lal Krishna Advani. They do not see any other way apart from Lal Krishna Advani, but here also the same principle of the Sangh which states that people above the age of 75 years should retire from politics is seen to be the obstacle, as Lal Krishna Advani has in fact crossed 80 years of age. Gurumurthy created the entire environment against Nitin Gadkari on the one hand, made people stand against him and on the other hand he also gave a so called clean chit to Nitin Gadkari publicly. So it can be considered that Gurumurthy is the specialist in the art of complicating and solving games for the Bharatiya Janata Party. But in all these moves and counter moves the morale of the dedicated members of the Bharatiya Janata Party has been hurt the most. They are unable to understand whether it is the Congress which tops in deceiving itself in its own eyes or is it their own Bharatiya Janata Party which tops. The workers are also not able to understand why the party which takes the name of Rama and takes Ramrajya as its ideal is not taking the example of Rama, viz. if doubts creep into the minds of the society regarding the King, then the King should remove the reasons for those doubts. The top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party has also forgotten that Rama had ‘sacrificed’ Sita only on the say of a ‘dhobi’ ( washerman ).
