History only remembers a hero, a villain or a clown. The only difference between a villain and a hero: a villain always blackens history and a hero always creates history. In this situation where villains are trying to blacken the democracy of India, the country is looking for a real hero. Who will be that person, who will raise his or her voice against the present system, will show courage to change it and will help in awakening the
Anna Hazare, Baba Ramdev and Arvind Kejriwal, these are a few names which the common people feel will raise their voices against corruption and maladministration, will change the corrupt system and change the country. But the process of bringing change in the country is not so easy. It will not work only by bringing the people of Delhi and Mumbai onto the streets. Moreover just a few fasts will not affect the present deaf and dumb government. Then what is the solution? Obviously, the movement which Anna Hazare, Baba Ramdev or Arvind Kejriwal have started should be continued in every city and every village of the country.
In the mean time, attention must be paid to an incident which occurred on 27 August 2012, at Patna Airport, where an enthusiastic crowd of thousands gathered. The crowd was waiting for a great hero. It seemed to them that after a long time, a real hero has arrived. As soon as former Army Chief, General V. K. Singh reached Patna Airport, the whole airport area resounded with slogans cheering the General. There was virtually no one who was not present at the airport. Gandhiwadi, JPwadi, women, intellectuals and more specifically the youth, all were echoing the same thing : that the country has found a person who can rid the country of its problems. General (Retd) V. K. Singh, covered with garlands, said that you should go forward, I am always with you. More specifically, he addressed the youth, telling them that only they have the strength to take India to the top position. “You must come forward, and then only we can make this country great”, he said.
While welcoming General Singh, the Founder and Chairman of the Indian Institute of Business Management (IIBM), Patna, Prof. Uttam Kumar Singh said that it is very pathetic to see the current situation of our country. He said that he considers General Singh as a National Hero and reiterated that he must continue his good work with a vision of again making India ‘The Golden Bird.’ All of Bihar is with you, he said. He also added that the country is expecting a change from this ondition and a lot depends on General Singh. “During your tenure in the Army, the way you created an example of honesty and conscientiousness, the country is very impressed”, he said at the Seminar. The Seminar on ‘Eradication of Corruption and Social Responsibilities: Opportunities and Challenges’ was headed by the Chairman of the Legislative Council, Awadhesh Narayan Singh.
After the Seminar, a citizen salutation programme was organised at the A. N. Sinha Institute, where more than 100 organisations honoured former Army Chief (Retd) V. K. Singh. On this occasion the grand daughter in law of Veer Kunwar Singh, Pushpa Singh said that in the present unfavourable conditions she wants to see General Singh as Veer Kunwar Singh. “I am like your mother and you will surely win the fight that you have started against corruption” she said. On this occasion, Swami Sahajanand Saraswati and the Chairman of the Social Justice Board and youth leader Rohit Singh said that the whole youth power of Bihar is with General Singh. The youth is ready to come out on the streets with a single indication from him. Rohit Singh also said that in the fight against corruption, the youth of Bihar are ready to face any kind of problem. Along with Rohit Singh, the Chief Secretary General of the Samajik Nyay Manch, Upendra Yadav, Senior Vice Chairman Dr. Vidipt Subarna and Ranjan Ojha and many youth honoured General Singh. The Samajik Nyay Manch also gifted a souvenier to General Singh.
Our country is affected with multi-organ failure. The challenge is big but the hopes are also high. If the youth of country come forward then we can fight this situation in a shorter duration. The consciousness of the intellectuals must be raised, but before starting the fight we should remember that whenever we have lost any fight the main reason behind it has been our lack in unity. Development of this country cannot depend only on GDP _ it is only a caricature of statistics and doesn’t have any social impact. It is only the impact of economic betterment by which you can show a clean face, and not by manipulating the statistics.
– General (Retd) V.K. Singh
The manner in which the people of Patna came to see and listen to General (Retd) V. K. Singh, seemed to clearly indicate the start of a movement. General (Retd) V. K. Singh while interacting with the people said that corruption is spreading like cancer in the country. There was a time when Subhash Chandra Bose coined the slogan : ‘Give me blood, I will give you freedom.’ Now the situation is such that the country is driven by the slogan ‘Give me money, I will do your work.’ While interacting with the youth and intellectuals, he said that the country is going through a difficult phase. As such, the youth should come forward to take the country out of these difficulties. The Former Army Chief acknowledged the role of Bihar and said that Bihar has always been a pioneer in starting revolutions in the country — issues and matter which start here always reach every corner of the country.
Actually, in the last year, such a situation has indeed been created and movements have occurred in such a manner, but this has still not affected the Government. The strategy of these movements had some drawbacks which led to the failure of the movements. For instance, after completing the fast at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi, Anna Hazare and his team didn’t follow up the groundswell of support in other parts of the country. Neither did they run any campaign to keep in constant touch with the common people. If Anna Hazare had travelled throughout the whole country and interacted with the people, then the situation could have been quite different. Baba Ramdev travels the whole country, but among his colleagues the number of his devotees and his patients are more than the common people.
General Singh said that our country is affected with multi-organ failure. The challenge is big but the hopes are also high. If the youth of country come forward then we can fight this situation in a shorter duration than otherwise. The consciousness of the intellectuals must be raised, but before starting the fight we should remember that whenever we have lost any fight the main reason behind it has been our lack in unity. He said that development of this country cannot depend only on GDP _ it is only a caricature of statistics and doesn’t have any social impact. It is only the impact of economic betterment by which you can show a clean face, and not by manipulating statistics. We can get a clear idea about our economic condition from the fact that any country can decrease the value of our currency at will. Singh also said that there was a time when at a single signal from the leaders, people used to forego one meal a day, but now there is no such environment.
Fingers are being raised against the Prime Minister and the President which has a wrong impact on democracy in the country. Today the prime requirement is a balance between the social and economic conditions, and then only this Separatist Movement will come to an end. The actual meaning of democracy is thought to be only elections but democracy actually means involvement of all. Even after the completion of 60 years of Independence, we are going in the backward direction instead of progressing. Education and health should be the basic right of every citizen, but we are failing to abide by this right. We are losing faith in Government schools. Government hospitals are only for names sake and all these are dominated by the corporate houses. Today the requirement is for skilled people, but the system has become so poor that the number of educated unemployed is increasing day by day. General Singh showed his concern on the issue of increasing Naxalism in the country and said that if we see any night view of the earth on the ‘Google Earth’ website then we will see dark patches in some areas. It means that development is still pending there. Today Naxalism is spreading very rapidly and if the conditions do not change then it will spread in the whole country.
While talking about the Army he said that the Army is the only entity in India which is secular as well as patriotic. There is no inequality in it. The Army completes every work with perfection, but now a days the Army is also being targeted and efforts are also being made to make is weak. Bihar is a land of Movements. He said that a Student Movement of Bihar has already removed a party from power at the Centre. Bihar is known for revolution and till now that passion is visible. In the present situation, Bihar has to be the ‘changer’; the process for bringing changes in the country should begin here, especially as the youth of Bihar are hopeful and passionate. Many Muslim organisations met General Singh and appealed to him to continue his journey with full force.
A GOOD BEGINNING
General (Retd) V. K. Singh made a very good beginning : immediately after his retirement he started travelling in different parts of the country, started meeting farmers, former soldiers and their family members. He also raised his voice against land acquisition. Recall the incident that occurred fairly recently at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. When General (Retd) V. K. Singh reached the venue to break the fast of Team Anna and Anna Hazare, the whole country including the common people and the media was curious and keen to listen to him. When General Singh reached Patna, the manner in which the public welcomed him and the way he interacted with them shows a ray of hope for ending the country’s hopeless situation.
